The Things of the Earth {A Book Review}

I have to be honest, I didn’t love this book. At first, I was excited to read it, as the premise sounded so interesting. How do we balance our adoration of God with our enjoyment of worldly pleasures — and by worldly pleasures I mean our family, our friends, the beauty of the earth — how can we be sure that we are not making those things, though good, our idols? There is definitely a fine line, and I was excited to see how the author presented his thoughts on the matter.

However, the book is written more like a thesis or textbook than a general non-fiction book. The author, who is a professor, even admits to such in the introduction. That alone wouldn’t have deterred me too much, but the author also has some different religious views than I, so I had a hard time following along with his thoughts and logic, as we don’t believe in some of the same theology.

He did have some interesting points, and I definitely was prone to deep thought while reading the book, so that is a positive, although most of the thinking I was doing was re-strengthening my own testimony and views that were different than his. And that’s ok.

BUT I am grateful that this book was written. It’s an interesting and important topic to address. So, if it sounds like you might like it, give it a try. I know most reviews of this book are 4 or 5 stars, so odds are you will probably like it 🙂

I received free product from Family Christian in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
