Wisdom Teeth Extraction

In August, after a few years of putting it off, I got my wisdom teeth out. Ouch! I’m one of those who hate the dentist. The sounds, the smells, just everything puts me on high anxiety alert. But I knew I needed to get my wisdom teeth out. I didn’t have any pressing reason that I needed to have them out now, it was just a better safe than sorry type of thing. Fun fact: my x-rays when I was 18 didn’t show any wisdom teeth, so when my x-rays when I was 22 did, it was quite unexpected. And then, like I said, because of one thing or another, I put off getting them taken out until this August, when I was 26.

I was expecting it to be pretty terrible. All of the worse case scenarios ran through my head. What if the numbing and/or sedation didn’t work and I could feel everything? What if I got a dry socket? What if I was in pain for weeks? What if they messed up and I had to go back in a second time? All of these thoughts haunted me for the week or two leading up to the scheduled date.

But, luckily, everything went fine. I was completely out of it the whole time, and honestly don’t remember much of that day at all. I healed fairly quickly, and was never in too much pain (thank you, medication). And I now have 4 less teeth. (I also got 4 cavities filled at the same time so that was extra fun!)

I took this fabulous picture just minutes before the sedation took effect. You’re welcome.

If you or someone you love is scheduled to have this procedure done in the next little bit, lucky for you I’ve put together a wisdom teeth extraction survival kit, that offers all you need for recovery. It’s pretty basic, but it’s what really helped me as I was recovering, and hopefully it helps you, too! (PS, remember to not drink through a straw or suck anything at all when you’re recovering or it could dislodge the blood clots!)

Someone That Takes Care Of You

Alright, this isn’t necessarily a thing you can give a person, but it’s needed! I had to have someone drop me off and take me home (hello, sedation!) and put me to bed when we got back. Luckily, Kyle was able to be that person for me. My mom also drove up, to take care of my kids while Kyle was taking care of me. It worked out perfectly!

Your Bed

This is a given, right? You’re going to be out of it from sedation, and also in pain, so bed it is! I won’t lie, I was happy I got to catch up on some sleep and not play mommy for a day or two. And my bed is super comfy, but I digress….

Pudding

This was the number one thing I ate for days. I mean, pudding is just so good, anyway! And it’s the perfect consistency for eating having just had dental work done. I highly recommend the powdered kind you make yourself, but pre-packaged is fine, too.

Jell0

Like pudding, the consistency is just perfect for when you have a sore mouth and can’t chew anything.

Mashed Potatoes

If I could’ve, I probably would have just eaten pudding for days and called it good. But sometimes your body craves “real food”, as it were. That’s when mashed potatoes came in. Homemade are great, but I just used the small packets of instant, and they were perfect!

Sonicare Toothbrush

Whether you’re having your wisdom teeth out, cavities filled, or your teeth whitened (or any other dental work done!) you’re going to want to make sure you’re taking care of your teeth afterwards. That’s where the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Toothbrush comes in. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I have a hard time brushing my teeth – I just don’t enjoy it, plus I never know if I’m hitting all the spots I need to. That’s why this new toothbrush is so amazing. Along with this being an electric toothbrush, you download an app alongside it, that tells you in real time how good of a brusher you are, if you’ve missed any spots, if you’re using too much pressure, etc. It takes out all of the guess work! You can set and track your own daily goals, to achieve your healthiest smile yet.

It’s been a lot of fun trying out this toothbrush — I’ve never had an electronic one before! And I love the app. You can pick up your own Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Toothbrush at Bed, Bath and Beyond! And you can learn even more about this awesome toothbrush here, or here!
