Operation Read Your Shelves // October // City of Women

I was so excited when Lauren announced this new series. Heaven knows I have quite a few books on my bookshelf that NEED TO BE READ. Sadly, I haven’t quite finished this months book. I was reading a few other books and then needed to take a breather before I dived into my next 6 “to-read” books. But never fear, I’m still hear to tell you about the book, even if I haven’t finished it yet.

I actually received this book a couple of years ago after winning it through a goodreads giveaway. And then, for some reason or another, it just sat on my bookshelf. And now I’m about half-way through it and to be honest, I’m not impressed.

On the surface, it seems to be a book I would enjoy, Germany, WWII, hiding Jews, etc. But once I got into it…. It focuses on a German woman whose husband is currently off fighting the war somewhere. And she also had a Jewish lover who has disappeared. So that’s all fine and well, but they author brings up her affair with the Jewish man every other page. And it gets really old to read about their sexual exploits all.the.time. The book also jumps back in time often, as she thinks about or remembers things, which is also fine, but it’s often confusing, because she’ll be in the present, and the next paragraph is the past, and then a page later she’s back in the present with hardly any indication of switching between the two. It’s hard to keep up.

So. I’ll keep on with it, because the rest of the storyline is fairly interesting… And I’ll come back in a few days time to let you know my thoughts on the book as a whole.

And I promise next time I will read the whole book before linking up 🙂

EDIT: I finished the book Monday night. It was pretty good. Aside from the things I had issues with that I mentioned earlier, I enjoyed it. The plot line was good and I enjoyed how everything was resolved and how the book ended. I’m not sure if I would necessarily recommend the book to someone who hadn’t heard of it, but if it’s a book you have on your own shelves or one you’ve had your eye on, give it a shot! Let me know what you think.
